If you need a dose of Monday motivation, look no further than Ifeanyi Ruth Umunna. The student body at Harvard Law School has officially elected her as Student Government Co-President for the 2026–2027 academic year a remarkable achievement that goes beyond campus recognition.
This milestone is not only a win for the HLS community but also a proud moment for Nigerians across the globe. Reacting to the announcement on LinkedIn, Ifeanyi expressed gratitude, saying she was “humbled and honoured” to serve alongside her co-president, Tenzin Y., and thanked the student body for trusting their vision.
Her journey to this leadership role is backed by an impressive record of academic and professional excellence. Before Harvard, she was a 2024 Gates Cambridge Scholar at the University of Cambridge, where she earned an MPhil in Criminology, focusing on international criminal justice systems. Her passion in this field was shaped further during her time working as a Congressional Aide to Stephen Lynch.
A graduate of American University, where she earned a summa cum laude degree in Political Science, Ifeanyi also founded ZeEntry a nonprofit initiative aimed at bridging the technology gap for justice-involved individuals.
Excellence runs in her family. She is the daughter of Dehlia Umunna, a Clinical Professor of Law at Harvard Law School and Faculty Director of the Criminal Justice Institute, as well as the first Nigerian professor at the institution.
Adding to her growing list of accomplishments, Ifeanyi was recently awarded the prestigious Chayes Fellowship, which will support her Summer 2026 internship with the UK’s Public Defender Service in London marking a full-circle moment, as it aligns with the roots of her mother’s legal journey.
From being a Juris Doctor candidate to a former Congressional staffer and now a student government president, Ifeanyi Ruth Umunna is undoubtedly a rising force to watch.
